Sacristan

Chairperson:
 Mary Lou Flocchinidre@strosereno.com  or 851-1874

Sacristy ministers prepare the linens, vessels, vestments, and altar for Mass and other services.

Training is individualized and scheduled as needed when ministers volunteer.  Training takes about two hours.

Once trained, a sacristan will be scheduled as frequently as he/she wishes and on a need only basis.  On days where a sacristan is needed, please arrive approximate 30 minutes prior.

Altar Servers
Chairperson:  Kevin CiccottiKevin.Ciccotti@sbcglobal.net or 750-4008
Altar Servers assist the priest during the Mass and other liturgies.  Specific responsibilities may include 1.) Bell Ringer 2.) Acolyte (one pair of servers who carry the candles) 3.) Cross Bearer 4.) Thurifer (senior Altar Server is responsible for the charcoal burner).

Altar Servers are scheduled for one or two Masses each month.
An Altar Server who can not serve at a scheduled Mass is expected to arrange a replacement.

Schedules are usually posted two months in advance.

Altar Servers must have received their First Holy Communion prior to training.  The initial training session is one hour, scheduled either individually as needed or in a group.  After initial training, the newer server will be scheduled with more experienced servers until he/she is comfortable with the responsibilities.
If your son or daughter is interested in joining this rewarding ministry, please give Jim a call at the number listed above.

GENERAL RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS

FOR ALTAR SERVERS AT ST. ROSE OF LIMA

GENERAL RULES:

DRESS CODE:

Altar Servers should always dress appropriately for the Lord. Remember, you are serving at the banquet of the Lord when you assist the Priest at Mass. You should dress just as you would for a King. Jesus is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. You should wear slacks and shirt (boys) or a dress (girls), with dress shoes. “Flip Flops” are not proper or allowed. Your Cassock and Surplice should fit you properly. Cassocks should extend down to your ankles and the surplice should extend to just below your waist.

DEMEANOR:

Remember to stay focused on the Mass. Participate in the Liturgy and be aware of what your duties are and when to perform them. Do not stare or get distracted by what is going on in the congregation. Move slowly and reverently around the Altar so that you are not a distraction to the congregation. NEVER RUN ON THE ALTAR. Give yourself enough time to get up and move slowly to where you need to go to perform your duties. Move together as a “team” unless you are doing something that only requires one server.

TIMELYNESS AND ABSENTEEISM:

Be at the church at least 15 before Mass starts to get dressed and prepare things at the Altar (e.g. lighting the candles, getting the Cross, etc.). If you are scheduled to serve and there is a problem or conflict, find someone to replace you. If you notice that a server is missing (due to illness or other), get step up and volunteer to help.

GENUFLECTING:

During the celebration of the Liturgy you will genuflect at the beginning of the Mass and at the end of the Mass with the Priest. If you are holding the cross or a candle, you do not need to genuflect but you should bow your head in reverence to the Lord. At all other times during the Mass when you pass before the Tabernacle you should bow in deep reverence to the Lord (from the waist).

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

ENTRANCE AND OPENING PRAYER:

The Cross bearer processes in front of the group followed by the candle bearers (if there are 3 servers). If there are only two servers the candles will be left at the Altar and only the Cross will be carried to the Altar.

• The Cross Bearer places the Cross in the stand and proceeds to where the “book” is kept. The server picks up the book and waits for the Priest to start the Opening Prayer (after the Gloria). You should be standing in front of the Priest with the book open and ready when the Priest begins the Opening Prayer (“Let us Pray”).

• The other server(s) goes to their seats and remains standing with their hands in the “prayer” position.

• After the Opening Prayer, the server places the book back on its stand and goes to his/her seat. All servers sit down at the same time and wait for the start of the readings.

E
xtraordinary Ministers of Holy
  Communion

Chairperson:  Chris &  Ann Potts ann.potts@chw.edu  or  825-9183
Scheduler:  Gary Williamsgary.sr@earthlink.net

Extraordinary Ministers assist with the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass.  EMs help set up the altar prior to Mass and clear the altar after Mass.

EMs have an initial training session of about 1 hour.  These trainings are scheduled throughout the year or on an individual basis as needed to prepare
new volunteers.  In addition to the initial training, EMs attend two to three brief refresher sessions per year.

Extraordinary Ministers are scheduled for two to three Masses per month, depending on how many volunteers there are per Mass time.  For each Mass, the EM is expected to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the start of Mass and stay a few minutes after to clear the altar (only those who are assigned #6 and #7 positions).
Schedules are usually posted two months in advance. An EM who cannot serve at a scheduled Mass is expected to recruit a replacement.

If you would like to become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, please contact Chris and/or Ann Potts at the above phone number or email.

Proclaimers
Chairpersons:  Carlos & Nancy Romorenoromo@hotmail.com
Scheduler:  Gary Williamsgary.sr@earthlink.net

At parish liturgies, Proclaimers process into the church with the celebrant and servers, then read the scripture passages and announcements to the congregation.

Proclaimers have an initial training of about 2 hours.  Refresher courses are scheduled throughout the year.  Read the church`s bulletin for updates.

Each Proclaimer is provided, at the beginning of each liturgical year, a workbook showing one how to read the scripture, pronounce difficult words, and project your voice in a spiritual yet reverent way.  It is suggested that you practice your assigned reading prior to Mass.

Proclaimers are scheduled for one or two Masses a month.  A Proclaimer who can not serve at a scheduled Mass is expected to arrange a replacement.
Schedules are usually posted two months in advance.

Chairperson: Troy Brownushertroy@charter.net

Ushers greet parishioners and visitors, seat people during heavily attended Masses, take up collections, provide assistance during emergencies, maintain order when necessary, and distribute bulletins after Mass.

Ushers have an initial training session of one to two hours, scheduled on a Saturday or evening.

After the initial training, ushers attend semi-annual meetings for refresher courses and updates.  Ushers are scheduled to serve at least two Masses per month, usually for 1.5 hours per Mass.

An usher who can not serve at a scheduled Mass is expected to arrange a replacement.

Volunteers are always needed at the Masses.  Please contact Troy if you would like to volunteer!

Schedules are usually posted two months in advance.
