Introducing the Diocese of Reno

Parish Vocation Cross Program

The Serra Club of Reno and the Knights of Columbus of St. Rose of Lima, invites you to become a part of a program being initiated in the Diocese of Reno.  It is called our Parish Vocation Cross.

This is how the program works:

Each Sunday, a family, couple or individual will be called forward at a Mass to receive the vocation cross and special prayers written to accompany it.  In taking the cross they commit themselves to pray the vocation prayers in the name of the parish.  The prayers are for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and the religious life.  They are also prayers of thanksgiving for all those generously sharing in Church ministry, in particular, for the gift of sisters, brothers, priests and deacons.

Everyone is invited to participate in the program.  There is a sign-up sheet available on the counter in the vestibule.  All families are encouraged to sign up for one of the weeks and then to attend the Mass you choose to receive the cross.

It is our hope that this experience will encourage each of us to take seriously our vocation as a member of the Body of Christ and encourage ALL of us to pray for the gift of vocations to priesthood and religious life.

We believe the Holy Spirit is calling forth men and women from St. Rose to these roles of service.  May our prayers help inspire young women and men to be attentive to the movement of the Holy Spirit within them and to step forward in faith and with generous hearts to wherever the Holy Spirit leads them.

Parish Vocation Cross

Explanation for Parishioners

On behalf of St. Rose of Lima parish community, we thank you for your participation in the Parish Vocation Cross Program.  Here are some details regarding your participation:

Receiving the Cross:

Be sure to attend the Mass at which the cross will be distributed.  After the closing prayer of the Mass, you will be invited to come to the altar to receive the cross and the special vocation prayer.  You may return to your place after you receive it.

Prayers during the week:

We encourage you to pray the Vocation Prayers with your family at a convenient time each day during the week.  You might also use this as an opportunity to talk together about priests, sisters and brothers you have known and admire.

Returning the Cross:

It is very important that you return the cross on time so that the next participants will be able to receive it on schedule.  Please return the Vocation Cross to the table in the vestibule prior to the Mass designated as the one after which the Vocation Cross is given.

If you have any questions, please call the parish office at 851-1874.

Thank you again for this ministry of prayer in the name of our parish.

Celebrant:

We ask you to represent our parish this week in praying for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Receive the Vocation Cross.  It is inscribed with the words, “Master of the harvest, hear our prayer”, recalling the instruction Jesus gave when he said, “Pray to the Master of the Harvest to send laborers for the harvest.”

Celebrant:

Thank you for your prayers this week; we hope that many of our fellow parishioners will also join in this prayer. May our efforts be pleasing to the Lord and may God answer our prayer.

A Prayer for Vocations

Leader: In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
All:       Amen
Leader:

O God, listen to our prayer as we gather to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.  As we look upon the cross, we remember the love of Jesus who calls us through Baptism to follow him in service to our sisters and brothers.

 Psalm 100
Leader:    Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth, serve the Lord with gladness, enter God’s presence with joy!
All:    Serve the Lord with gladness, enter God’s presence with joy!
Leader: Know that the Lord is God, our maker to whom we belong, our shepherd and we, the flock.
All:  Serve the Lord with gladness, enter God’s presence with joy!
Leader: Enter the temple gages, the courtyard with thanks and praise; give thanks and bless God’s name.
All: Serve the Lord with gladness, enter God’s presence with joy!
Leader: Indeed the Lord is good; God is lasting love, faithful from age to age.
All:   Serve the Lord with gladness; enter God’s presence with joy!

 Reading Luke 10:1-3

After this, Jesus appointed seventy two others and sent them ahead of him, two by two into every town and place in intended to visit.  He said to them: “The harvest is plentiful but the laborers and few; pray, therefore, the Master of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Leader:    Let us take a moment of silence to think about how we might be called to help the master of the harvest.

 Prayers for Vocations

Gentle God,

You call us by name and lead us to life.  Through baptism you commission us to proclaim the Good News.

Bless and strengthen all men and women, lay and ordained, who serve in the Church.

Guide and give wisdom to those discerning their vocations.

Enrich our Church with dedicated married and single people, with deacons, priests, and religious.

Filled with joy and your Holy Spirit may we follow Jesus, our Good Shepherd, now and always.

Amen

Heavenly Father, bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers and sisters.  Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require.  Form us all in the likeness of your Son so that in him, with him and through him we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere.  With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen
